I didn't even know what to say. I saw a person I know today, an older, white lady of some means. We were talking about plays and she mentioned seeing a solo work recently by an African-American artist. "It was great," she said, "Truly marvelous. You should check it out."
"Sounds great," I said.
"I didn't understand a word of it, though. Not a single word. I guess I'm too old."
"Yeah," I said, "Well..."
"He's got to clean that up. People like me are the ones buying theatre tickets. I told the artistic director."
...
How do you tell someone that's exactly what's wrong with theatre today? How?

Wow. That's it in a nutshell. And, when it comes to theatre, I so wish understandable didn't equal good. There's something unbalanced about that.
